# Atelier

*An atelier is a workshop or studio; in fashion, the workrooms of a couture house where garments are made by hand.*

A couture house traditionally has two kinds of atelier: the *flou*, for soft dressmaking in light fabrics, and the *tailleur*, for structured tailoring. Each is led by a première who translates the designer’s sketch or [toile](https://teazle.art/glossary/toile.md) into a finished garment.
