# Batiste

*Batiste is a fine, soft, lightweight plain-woven fabric, originally linen and now often cotton.*

Batiste is one of the finest plain-woven cloths: smooth, slightly sheer and soft. Originally a linen made in northern France and Flanders, it is now usually cotton or a cotton blend.

## How is it used?

For lingerie, christening gowns, handkerchiefs, blouses and as a lining or underlining. It is the classic ground for [whitework](https://teazle.art/glossary/whitework.md) and heirloom sewing. Cambric is a closely related fine cloth.
