# Bonnet

*A bonnet is a hat, usually framing the face and tied under the chin, worn by women and children especially in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.*

Nineteenth-century bonnets had a brim that framed the face and ribbons tied under the chin; their size and shape changed with fashion, from the deep poke bonnet to small bonnets worn at the back of the head. In Scotland, “bonnet” also names men’s soft brimless caps.
