# Broderie anglaise

*Broderie anglaise is white embroidery made of eyelets, small holes cut or punched and edged with buttonhole or overcast stitches, usually in floral patterns.*

Broderie anglaise, “English embroidery”, is a form of [whitework](https://teazle.art/glossary/whitework.md). Patterns of round and oval eyelets, edged with stitches and set among satin-stitched leaves, are worked on white cotton or linen. It was hugely popular for nineteenth-century underwear and children’s clothes, and is now made mostly by machine.
