# New Look

*The New Look is the name given by the press to Christian Dior’s first collection of February 1947, with its narrow waist, padded hips and long, full skirts.*

Dior’s first collection, shown in Paris on 12 February 1947, presented two lines, Corolle and En 8. Their rounded shoulders, cinched waists and long skirts using many metres of fabric were a deliberate break with wartime austerity. A fashion editor, usually identified as Carmel Snow of *Harper’s Bazaar*, called it a “New Look”, and the name stuck.
