# Rational dress

*Rational dress was the Victorian reform movement that judged women's clothing by health and freedom of movement; Britain's Rational Dress Society dates from 1881.*

Rational dress was the Victorian reform movement that judged women's clothing by health, comfort and freedom of movement. In Britain it was organized from 1881 by the Rational Dress Society, which opposed tight corsets, high heels, heavy skirts and crinolines.

## What did the movement ask for?

The society said it protested against any fashion that "deforms the figure, impedes the movements of the body, or in any way tends to injure the health." It named tight corsets, high-heeled shoes, heavily weighted skirts, tie-down cloaks and crinolines. According to Wikipedia, the catalog of its inaugural exhibition listed five attributes of perfect dress: freedom of movement, no pressure on any part of the body, no more weight than warmth required, grace combined with comfort, and "not departing too conspicuously from the ordinary dress of the time." Leading members included Florence, Viscountess Harberton, Mary Eliza Haweis and Constance Wilde.

## How does it relate to bloomers and cycling?

The American bloomer costume of 1851 is an earlier reform garment. In the 1890s the cycling boom gave the movement a far larger audience than its exhibitions had reached, because cyclists needed clothes that did not tangle in a chain. Reform was not painless: in 1898 Lady Harberton was refused service at a Surrey hotel in her cycling clothes, and the prosecution that followed in 1899 failed.
