# Warp

*The warp is the set of lengthwise threads held under tension on a loom, through which the weft is woven.*

In weaving, the warp threads are stretched on the loom first and run the length of the finished cloth. The [weft](https://teazle.art/glossary/weft.md) is then passed across them, over and under, to make the fabric.

## Why does the warp matter to dressmakers?

Warp threads are usually stronger and more tightly twisted, so cloth is most stable along the warp, the lengthwise [grain](https://teazle.art/glossary/grain.md). The edges that run parallel to the warp are the [selvages](https://teazle.art/glossary/selvage.md).
