Embroidery & Cross-Stitch Size Calculator

Find the finished size and the fabric to cut for a cross-stitch or embroidery design from its stitch count, Aida or evenweave count and margin, or work out the largest design that fits a given size. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Question
Units

1. Fabric

2. The design

Default 3 in (7.5 cm) on every side: room for a hoop or frame, finishing and mistakes.

3. The same design on other fabrics

How it is calculated

One inch is exactly 2.54 cm. Everything is worked in inches and converted at the end.

Stitches per inch

  • Aida: the count is the number of blocks per inch and one stitch fills one block, so stitches per inch = count. Aida 14 is 14 stitches per inch.
  • Evenweave over two threads: stitches per inch = count ÷ 2. Evenweave 28 over two is 14 stitches per inch, the same as Aida 14.
  • Over one thread: stitches per inch = count. Evenweave 28 over one is 28.

Sizes

  • Design size (in) = stitches ÷ stitches per inch. Example: 200 stitches on Aida 14 = 14.29 in; 112 stitches on Aida 16 = 7 in.
  • Centimetres = inches × 2.54. 200 stitches on Aida 14 is 36.3 cm.
  • Cut size = design size + 2 × margin, for width and height separately. 14.29 in with 3 in margins is 20.29 in.
  • Reverse: largest whole stitch count = ⌊target size (in) × stitches per inch⌋. 10 in on Aida 14 holds 140 stitches; 20 cm on Aida 14 holds 110 (110.24 rounded down).

Limitations

  • Counts are nominal. Fabric can be slightly off count, and it stretches in the hoop; stitch a test square if the size matters.
  • The result is for full cross stitches. Backstitch, French knots and fractional stitches do not change the stitch count, but a thick outline can look a little bigger.
  • Working over one thread on evenweave gives small, dense stitches. The tool takes the count as stitches per inch then, so be sure your chart was made for it.
  • The margin is the fabric you leave for framing or finishing, not part of the design. Cut sizes are not rounded to the standard pieces a shop sells.

Sources

  1. Cross-stitch, Wikipedia. Fabric count is threads per inch; a cross stitched over two threads on 28-count fabric finishes at the same size as a one-square cross on 14-count Aida.
  2. Aida cloth, Wikipedia. Aida is described by its count, the number of squares per linear inch; typical counts include 11, 14, 16 and 18.
  3. Aida fabric count explained: which count for your project, Stitcher. On evenweave, stitching over two threads halves the count: 28-count evenweave over two threads matches 14-count Aida, and 32-count matches 16-count.
  4. SI units: length, National Institute of Standards and Technology. The inch is exactly 25.4 mm, so 1 in = 2.54 cm.
