Broderie anglaise

Also: eyelet embroidery

Broderie anglaise is white embroidery made of eyelets, small holes cut or punched and edged with buttonhole or overcast stitches, usually in floral patterns.

Broderie anglaise, “English embroidery”, is a form of whitework. Patterns of round and oval eyelets, edged with stitches and set among satin-stitched leaves, are worked on white cotton or linen. It was hugely popular for nineteenth-century underwear and children’s clothes, and is now made mostly by machine.
