New Look
The New Look is the name given by the press to Christian Dior’s first collection of February 1947, with its narrow waist, padded hips and long, full skirts.
Dior’s first collection, shown in Paris on 12 February 1947, presented two lines, Corolle and En 8. Their rounded shoulders, cinched waists and long skirts using many metres of fabric were a deliberate break with wartime austerity. A fashion editor, usually identified as Carmel Snow of Harper’s Bazaar, called it a “New Look”, and the name stuck.
