Jersey

Jersey is a knitted fabric, smooth on the face and looped on the back, that stretches and drapes; it is named after the island of Jersey.

Jersey is plain-knit fabric, the structure of a hand-knitted stocking stitch made by machine. It stretches, recovers and drapes without wrinkling, which is why it is the fabric of T-shirts and much modern dress.

Why does it matter in fashion history?

Jersey was long used for underwear and sportswear. Its adoption for women’s day clothes in the early twentieth century, often associated with Gabrielle Chanel, made comfort and movement part of fashionable dress.
