The Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshops) was a design workshop founded in Vienna in 1903 by the architect Josef Hoffmann and the designer Koloman Moser. It made furniture, metalwork, textiles and fashion until it closed in 1932.

What was the Wiener Werkstätte?

According to the Austrian lexicon AEIOU, it was founded in 1903 by Hoffmann and Moser as a limited company, modeled on the Arts and Crafts movement in England and Scotland. It aimed to renew art through quality craft products and worked with the Vienna School of Applied Arts and the Vienna Secession. The financier Fritz Waerndorfer backed it until 1914, after which O. and M. Primavesi took over.

What did it make?

Textiles were among its most lucrative products, says the National Gallery of Victoria: patterns served for furnishings, wallpaper, curtains and clothing, and Hoffmann designed hundreds of them. A fashion department followed, which the National Gallery of Victoria dates to 1910 and the Leopold Museum to 1911. The Vienna salon Schwestern Flöge, whose interiors the workshop furnished in 1904, made many of its gowns in the workshop's fabrics.

How did it end?

It shut down in 1932 for financial reasons, AEIOU records.
