Milliner

Also: millinery

A milliner is a maker of hats; millinery is the craft and trade of making them.

Milliners block felt and straw over wooden forms, wire and cover frames, and trim hats with ribbons, feathers and flowers. The word comes from Milan, whose merchants once sold fancy goods, and in the eighteenth century a milliner sold accessories and trimmings of all kinds before the trade narrowed to hats.
