Kimono

The kimono is the traditional Japanese T-shaped garment, wrapped left over right and secured with a sash called an obi.

A kimono is cut from a single bolt of narrow cloth into straight panels, so it has very little shaping; the fit comes from wrapping and the obi. Its patterns, colours and sleeve lengths signal season, age and occasion. The word means simply “thing to wear”.
