Plain weave

Also: tabby

Plain weave is the simplest weave structure: each weft thread passes alternately over and under one warp thread, and the next row reverses.

Plain weave, also called tabby, is the most basic way of interlacing threads. Each weft thread goes over one warp thread and under the next; the following row does the opposite. The result is a firm, balanced cloth that looks the same on both sides.

Which fabrics are plain weave?

A huge range, from heavy canvas to sheer muslin, batiste, chiffon, organza, taffeta and calico. What changes between them is the fibre, the thickness and twist of the yarn and how closely the threads are packed, not the structure.
